Return of the Mac or Windows of opportunity?

RAM issues

RAM issues

A couple of weeks ago my 2012 MacBook Pro died a horrible death. It’s a RAM problem that gives the screen a checkerboard type effect. I’m yet to venture into the case and attempt to fix the issue myself but I will be doing so watch this space.

I’d had my MacBook for a good 5 years aka an eternity in Apple years. Obviously I was in need of a quick solution and that brought up the big question... return of the Mac or go to the Windows of opportunity.

I asked around and it was a mixed response. The fact I use Logic Pro X gave Apple a big lead but I did look into DAW’s such as Reaper and Studio One.  Both of which were strong competitors and when I decide to build a PC I am going to get to know them both.

Another way I thought of doing it was to run a PC through a virtual machine. I was informed that it’s probably not the best way of doing it as the processor would probably explode into a million pieces with the amount of work it would have to do running everything. Next option…

I looked into building my own PC and the Microsoft Surface Book 2. The surface book is a full touch screen display, which I wasn’t interested in. The graphics were amazing and it rivals the MacBook Pro in spec but Windows 10 as a whole I’m not a fan of. Call me shallow but I prefer the Linux/Mac OS system, once you go Mac you never go back? It looks and works like I want it to without feeling like you’re in the office chained to your desk till 5pm.

In my opinion the Mac OS is more creative minded. However.... Apple as a company are money grabbing bastards. I always knew this but looking into their new products has confirmed it for me. I looked at the MacBook Pro 2018. Wow, I hated it. If you don’t know already, they have taken the useful features of the old MacBooks and replaced them with unnecessary extras. The touch bar, for example, on the 15inch model - nobody needs it, why is it there?! The thing that bugged me the most was the lack of ports. It comes with two USB-C ports and an aux input. That’s it. In time USB-C will take over and is very exciting technology but for now you think well how do I use my normal USB devices? The answer is you pay £90 for an Apple adapter - or you get a better one off amazon for 20 quid. (I can recommend the NOVOO USB-C Hub, it’s perfect… thanks Tom for the recommendation!) I was fuming when I found this out. Yes they have a solid business plan to take in the dollar but they make their customers feel like they’ve been robbed when they walk out the store.

The final question is which path did I choose, which product won, which company has my lovely hard earned cash?

Putting it to work already.

Putting it to work already.

I got the MacBook Pro 2018 13inch model for the fact that I know the software, I’m a sucker for the OS and it’s pretty to look at.

I sold my soul to Apple once again and no I’m still not sure about it.

I will give an update once I’ve tested it out on various sessions but for now it’s doing just fine.
